NORTHERN MARINE PRODUCTS AND PROCESSES EMBODY SOUND ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY

While Northern Marine's fleet of long range and luxury motor yachts is most widely regarded for its seagoing credentials and a growing number of transoceanic passages, perhaps less recognized is a cornerstone of the builder's culture that values environmental stewardship, both during the build and while each vessel is in use.

“As a pioneer in advanced resin-infusion technology, which the company employs exclusively for fabrication of composite components, Northern Marine has long acknowledged the ecological benefits of that process,” said Dave Mahalko, the company's vice president of marketing. Among the benefits he cited are:

  1. The vacuum-assisted infusion process requires less resin than conventional open-mold methods, and thus reduces consumption—and virtually eliminates waste—of this petroleum-based product. Northern Marine engineers also research new materials constantly, and whenever appropriate specify petroleum-free alternatives.
  2. Resin infusion is a closed-mold process, and as such captures volatile organic compounds (VOC), styrene and other pollutants that in open-mold lamination would enter the atmosphere.
  3. A vessel manufactured using resin-infused components is measurably lighter in weight than a conventionally-built boat of comparable size and design, and so uses fuel more efficiently, for greater cruise range and reduced consumption. Northern Marine hulls, equipped with long keels and full stabilization, also deliver improved course-keeping to optimize cruise efficiency.
  4. Cored composite hulls and superstructures—a universal feature on Northern Marine yachts—offer superior thermal insulation compared to steel or aluminum, and require less energy to heat and cool interior living spaces, reducing generator use and further reducing fuel burn while improving onboard comfort.

Northern Marine's LRC series features a fleet of yachts designed specifically for single-engine propulsion systems, an installation that delivers measurably greater efficiency than twins. Because it is located on centerline, the single main can be positioned low in the hull, in the case of Northern Marine yachts in a specially shaped keel recess, where it allows a nearly flat propeller shaft angle for more efficient thrust—yet another contributor to reduced fuel consumption. Low engine placement also helps lower the center of gravity for improved stability. Mahalko cited an additional benefit of the single-screw configuration in terms of the engine room space it yields compared to that allowed by twin engines. That space, he noted, translates to easier access around the engine, an attribute that facilitates routine maintenance including oil and filter changes, thus helping ensure cleanest possible combustion and reduced exhaust emissions.

Every model in Northern Marine's LRC series offers a standard get-home drive, powered by a generator or pony engine, to provide the security of back-up auxiliary power. “Some owners also use this system routinely for low-speed, high-efficiency cruising,” Mahalko said. Additionally, the get-home drive may be engaged to deliver ultra-quiet propulsion, as a welcome courtesy at an anchorage during late-night arrivals or pre-dawn departures, or as a responsibly unobtrusive way to explore sensitive wildlife habitats.

During each project's planning, development and construction phases, Northern Marine design teams work with clients to examine a range of environmentally friendly materials, from renewable and recycled fabrics to plantation-grown hardwoods “As experienced cruising enthusiasts, sportsmen, naturalists and explorers, our customers are acutely aware that preserving and improving the environment is in their own—and everyone else's—best interest,” said Mahalko, “so they doubly appreciate our efforts in that direction.”

About Northern Marine

Northern Marine is a leading builder of high-quality motor yachts and long range cruisers ranging in length from 57' to 151'. A pioneer in the application of resin-infusion composite technology, Northern Marine produces vessels of superior strength and low weight compared to those built using conventional methods. Since opening its doors in 1995 the company has built and delivered more than 25 yachts to 152' in length, one of which has completed a circumnavigation of the world's oceans.

In addition to lamination and manufacturing operations, Northern Marine maintains an in-house woodshop, metal shop and design department. The yard currently employs about 165 people.
