Other honors include recognition as 2007 ‘Yachtsman of the Year' by the Pacific Coast Yachting Association and by the Association of Santa Monica Bay Yacht Clubs. Northern Marine: a leader in resin-infusion technology
October 18, 2007 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Northern Marine: a leader in resin infusion technology As a growing number of boat builders begin to recognize the significant advantages of the resin infusion process compared to open-mold composite fabrication methods, and take steps to integrate this advanced technology into their production operations, they'll be using many of the techniques developed and refined over recent years by Northern Marine engineers and lamination specialists. As one of the earliest proponents of resin infusion, Northern Marine today is recognized as an industry leader in its application. The company’s growing fleet of luxury motoryachts and long-range cruisers offers proof of the technology's attributes in terms of structural integrity, strength-to-weight ratio, durability and finish. "Simply put, resin infusion is a way to produce a stronger, lighter, better composite part by using vacuum to eliminate air from lamination processes," said Dave Mahalko, Northern Marine's vice president of marketing. "The infusion process enables us to fully saturate the fabric matrix—fiberglass, E-glass, carbon fiber and coring—for maximum strength with measurably less resin, which translates to reduced weight and greater operating efficiency—higher speeds and greater cruising range—in the finished boat." Mahalko added that the process developed by Northern Marine engineers focuses on a calculated sequence of vacuum applications enabling the yard to infuse very large and highly detailed composite parts, including hull and superstructure of the 152' Sorcha and the 151' After Eight. "We infuse every large composite part of every boat we build," Mahalko said, "from hull and deck units to bulkheads and overhead panels." In addition to the structural and performance improvements that resin infusion delivers, Mahalko pointed to its ecological benefits. As a closed-mold process, he said, resin infusion virtually eliminates the release of volatile organic compounds into the atmosphere. As evidence of Northern Marine's success with resin infusion, Mahalko cited Sorcha's recently completed trans-Pacific voyage, during which the motor yacht routinely encountered severe conditions including seas in excess of 25' and ocean crossings as long as 3400 nautical miles. About Northern Marine Northern Marine Industries, Inc., is a leading builder of high-quality motoryachts and long-range cruisers ranging in length from 57' to 151'. Since opening its doors in 1995 the company has built and delivered more than 25 yachts to 152' in length, one of which has completed a circumnavigation voyage and another, a two-way trans-Pacific crossing. Northern Marine yacht captures interior design award at YachtFest San Diego
October 17, 2007 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Northern Marine yacht captures interior design award at Yachtfest. Northern Marine's 78-foot long-range expedition yacht Endurance has been awarded "Best Interior" honors at the 2007 YachtFest boat show in San Diego. The all-composite cruiser was selected from about 40 yachts on display at the mid-September event for its interpretation of a classic nautical theme, and was one of four winners of major awards presented at the show. Endurance's interior arrangement and décor were developed by Northern Marine's in-house design team to showcase the traditional appeal of gloss-finished mahogany, according to Marketing Vice President Dave Mahalko. "Endurance's interior offers a constant reminder that this is a sea-going vessel," Mahalko said, "with lateral beams in the saloon overhead, fluted columns, curved lintels and disciplined use of moldings throughout." He added that all joinery aboard Endurance and other yachts by Northern Marine is produced in the company's on-site cabinet shop, enabling clients to specify a fully customized interior. The yacht's arrangement places all main-deck spaces on a single level. The saloon features a built-in sofa and a corner cabinet enclosing an entertainment center. A peninsula counter amidships on the starboard side separates the dining area from the galley, which is fitted with Viking appliances and stone countertops. A passageway to port leads forward past a day head to the main-deck master suite, themed with a sunburst motif. The lower deck foyer provides access to two island king-berth, en suite guest staterooms, and to a third guest or crew accommodation opposite the laundry room. Endurance's bridge deck also offers a single-level design, from the foredeck then sternward along side walkways to a boat deck whose dimensions allow securing two tenders, deployed by a centerline davit. In the pilot house, three Stidd helm chairs face a wide console with instrument panel and navigation displays. An observation banquette with table is built adjacent to a pilot berth and desk. The flybridge coaming encircles an upper helm station and sun lounge seating. A single Cummins K19M engine, de-rated to increase efficiency and lengthen service intervals, delivers a range of 4,000 nautical miles. Three generators provide electrical service, and a 157 h.p. pony engine powers hydraulics and provides back-up propulsion. Endurance's hull features a bulbous bow to maximize cruising range and attenuate pitch for a smooth ride in a seaway. Northern Marine launches new 64' Long Range Cruiser
October 17,2007 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Northern Marine launches new 64’ Long Range Cruiser Northern Marine has announced the completion and launch of the newest in the company’s series of 64' long-range displacement cruisers. The all-composite yacht made its debut appearance at the Seattle Boats Afloat Show in September. Built on the same hull design as that of the well-known Spirit of Zopilote, the new 64 features a bulbous bow configuration to extend cruise range and reduce pitching motion in open water conditions, and a single 355 h.p. Volvo Penta D9MH main engine, which combines with the efficient hull form to deliver a 3,000 nautical mile range. The hull's high, flared forward sections contribute to a dry ride and true passage-making capability, according to Marketing Vice President Dave Mahalko. "The 64's hull has a pedigree that goes back to the first yacht built at Northern Marine," said Mahalko. "It has proved to be a superb platform for this series, and as a model for the design of our 57 and 80 series as well." The 64's interior design and arrangement are consistent with its long-range design brief, Mahalko noted, with generous storage spaces for extra provisioning, convenient traffic flow throughout the boat, and intelligent division of spaces for privacy and comfort. Built-in settees in the main-deck saloon and on the aft and flybridge decks, plus a dining/observation banquette in the pilot house, offer room for group seating indoors and out. The galley features commercial-grade appliances and an efficient layout for service to diners at the informal counter bar or at the adjacent six-place dining table. Three double staterooms, including a midship master suite, are arranged on the accommodation deck, and a pilot berth in the wheelhouse helps ensure proper watch-keeping on lengthy passages. Aft of the pilot house, a broad boat deck is fitted with a centerline davit for tender launch and recovery on either side. Two stairways provide access from the aft main deck area to the swim step for convenient access to docks or tenders. A variety of arrangements is available to accommodate individual preferences; Northern Marine's in-house joinery shop enables owners to specify fully customized finishes and décor items.
